post Updates to Gravity Game Prototype

January 20th, 2009

Filed under: Game Dev — BenW @ 3:35 am

It’s late and I’m tired so I’ll just list whats changed.

Added:

  • Level loading using xml
  • Barriers that bodies can bounce off of
  • Multiple player controlled bodies

Started work on but still not done:

  • Level transitions and level sets
  • Scrolling levels
  • Menus and level select screen
  • More stuff that I can’t remember

And of course the obligatory screenshots:

Plenty of unfinished stuff showing in the second screen and the lowish framerate is because I’m running it on my macbook.

I’ll upload another version when its polished a bit more.

post Retro Roads

January 11th, 2009

Filed under: Game Dev — BenW @ 6:09 pm

I ended up participating in this weekends MiniLD6 contest although I didn’t put in the effort I normally would for a full LD contest. I ended up working on this entry a little bit on Friday night, where I did all the art and music, and I did a bit of coding on Saturday, although not enough to actually call this a game.

I didn’t finish any of the gameplay and its missing half the art and all the sound and music I made. I was trying to stick to the limitations of the original gameboy since it went well with the monochrome theme. All you can do right now is walk around with the arrow keys and make a road using the spacebar. I’m pretty sure if you try and make a road offscreen it will crash, but I haven’t tried it. Anyways, let me know what you think and I’ll try and finish it up some time.

post Gravity Game Prototype

January 4th, 2009

Filed under: Game Dev — BenW @ 10:40 pm

Ever since I saw the collect the coins while orbiting small stars minigame thingy in super mario galaxy I wanted to try to do something similar although maybe with obstacles and enemies to flesh it out a bit. Over the past week I actually managed to sit down and crank out the beginnings of a rough prototype. It didn’t end up anything like the minigame that inspired it but I like what I’ve done with the game so far.

In the gallery below you can see the progress of the game so far. It’s gone through a lot of iterations and I’ve tried to choose screenshots that were representative of each one.

Make sure that you give the prototype a try and if you’re interested in more of the details of development you can read about them after the jump.

post Rocket Prototype

December 29th, 2008

Filed under: Game Dev — BenW @ 1:57 am

This is a game that I worked on briefly during spring of this year. The goal was for each player to bring scientists of different types back to their base to build a rocket and each scientist would modify a different parameter. There was also going to be some Streets of Rage style beat em up action and the fun would come from not knowing when your opponent would launch. If you launched too early you might not make it to space and would have to start over again.

I got to the point where some of the basic gameplay was in place. You can pick up scientists and bring them back to your base and they do affect the various attributes of your rocket. You can also launch the rocket but nothing happens if you make it to space. It’s not really fun yet but I feel like it still has potential and I may work on it again in the future if only to see if I can make it compelling and fun.

I’ll try and get video of it up soon so that you can see it in action.

Just showing off the badass splashscreen my friend made for me. I’ll be using it in my upcoming games.

post A Quick Update

December 19th, 2008

Filed under: Game Dev — BenW @ 4:22 pm

It’s been a very long time since I’ve updated the site, six months actually, but I have some stuff in the works that I will be posting very soon.

Without further ado they are:

  • A write up on the midi controller my friend and I made
  • The cnc conversion I’m helping another friend do to his mini-lathe
  • A video of me covering the theme from M.U.L.E.
  • And possibly a post about a few small game prototypes I worked on this year

post 10 Hour Project #1: Hours 1-4

June 19th, 2008

Filed under: Game Dev — BenW @ 12:20 pm

After the jump is a text dump of the notes I took while working on the first 4 hours of this game. It’s just whatever I was thinking at the time and there’s minimal formatting, but if anyone wants to dredge through it feel free.

post 10 Hour Project #1: Intro

June 16th, 2008

Filed under: Game Dev — BenW @ 10:25 pm

After skipping the most recent mini Ludum Dare contest because I didn’t like the theme I’ve been itching to write a game. However most of my games up to this point have been smaller projects, mostly because I knew I could finish them, and I’ve been wanting to try something larger for quite a while. That is why I’ve decided to break a larger project down into a series of smaller ones that are of a more manageable size. The overall goal for the project is to invest at least one hundred hours into making a game, which is considerably more than I’ve spent on any other game. Anyways, the game itself is going to be based on several ideas I got after talking with a friend about the hex based rpg he made for a class. Hopefully I’ll be able to test out several new gameplay ideas and to gain some experience making a larger game. For the first ten hour chunk I’ve decided to make a small find the item game on a hex based grid. I’m not even sure that you can really call that a game but it should provide a descent foundation for the rest of the project.

post My Old Games

January 26th, 2008

Filed under: Game Dev — BenW @ 12:44 pm

There are a few games missing from this gallery including my first and second games, as well as one I helped to port. It contains most of what I’ve made with exception of a few small side projects that never got finished as well as the games I mentioned before.

post And The Results Are In

January 24th, 2008

Filed under: Game Dev — BenW @ 3:52 pm

Well, the results are in for the tenth ludumdare competition and while I didn’t take first in the overall category I am very happy with how I placed.

The awards I received:

  • 1st in Innovation
  • 1st in Audio
  • 2nd Overall
  • 3rd in Fun

In previous competitions we’ve had the pelly as our trophy, sort of like the oscar, but this year nobody was nice enough to make a complete set so I’m claiming all the unfinished ones as my own.
